Trudging Through The Snow On New Year's Day

Neither snow drifts nor high tides deterred the American Littoral Society’s tradition of hiking along Rockaway Beach on New Year’s day.

A group of 80 strong showed up at Fort Tilden on a “balmy” January 1 (50 degrees F.) to hike along the beach, dunes and wooded trails of the National Park site.

“I think it’s our 28th year without a miss, said Don Riepe, the society’s Northeast Chapter director.

At the stroke of noon, the group shouted and waved across the harbor to another Littoral Society group hiking at Sandy Hook in New Jersey. “Of course, no one heard or saw us as is the tradition,“ said Riepe.

After the hike, the group assembled at the Rockaway Artist’s Alliance building for some cake and champagne to welcome in the new year and wish for cleaner beaches in 2011 !
