Broad Channel Bits

By Liz Guarino

A week after it fell all over the place, there’s still quite a bit of snow hanging around. Of course, it’s no longer clean and bright, but dingy and dirty-looking. Some of our neighbors have been heard to wish for rain to wash the remaining stuff away. At least the 8-foot mounds aren’t on the street corners anymore, but they may return — there’s plenty of winter in front of us.

Got a new computer as gift this year? Please consider donating your old equipment – PCs, CPUs, monitors, printers, keyboards, mice – to a good cause. A computer class needs more equipment so everyone who joins the class can become computer literate. So many things today are online from renewing your driver’s license to registering for college. I will print complete information on donating in a future column.

Mulchfest, where people can have their real trees and wreaths chipped and made into mulch, is this weekend. The closest park to the Channel is a drop-off location only and is at Rockaway Beach on Shore Front Drive and Beach 94 Street. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Remove all lights and other decorations before bringing to park.

In a scene which used Broad Channel for its scenery, Boardwalk Empire watchers may have noticed the Callahan bungalow being used in a dramatic shot. Also used were shots of the road right behind the water on Fort Tilden.

Please send material to be published in the column by Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. of the week before it is to appear. Thank you. Email can be sent to: Lizbcbits@aol.com
