And The Beat Goes On
Commentary by Susan Hartenstein

Neither rain, nor sleet, nor … well, you know the rest. As the wind and snow blow, swirl and dance outside my window; as the street lamps illume blue the frigid snowy scene that makes my warmed home and hearth feel even warmer, I complete this week’s column. Yes, the blizzard of 2010 is upon us but not even the most challenging of Mother Nature’s bag of tricks can keep me from delivering part deux of the column I began last week – that is, looking forward to 2011 with RAA.

Last week I told you about the first half of the New Year’s exhibition schedule – “Reflections,” “The Life of Still Objects,” “Windows,” The Brooklyn Watercolor invitational show and an exhibit of glass work by Patrick Clark and Renée Radenberg. The second half is just as enticing.

“Nature: Fur, Flora, Feathers”: RAA invites all artists to go wild and au natural. Animals, birds and flowers – domestic or feral, living, extinct or imaginary, real or surreal – are the subjects of this unique and vibrant exhibit. “Nature” is open to all media, including but certainly not limited to painting, photography, film, the literary arts, performance, mixed media, assemblage, sun prints, scientific drawing, stained glass, tactile art and more. Use your imagination, talent and skill to render the natural world in a new way, and bring ’em back alive! Submission deadline: April 22. Dates: May 21-June 26. Opening reception: Sunday, May 22, 12-4 p.m.

“Tomorrow’s Art Today”: This exhibition invites the question: What is “modern art” in the 21st century? Pushing the bounds of form, format, color, contour, construction, text and context, artists are called to conjure the artistic answer in new and exciting ways. All media, including sculpture, tactile and kinetic art, assemblage, digital art, painting, mechanical drawing, photography, poetry and prose, sight and sound pieces, film, printmaking, industrial arts and more, are included. Share your forward vision and send us your best. On view concurrent with “Nature,” all dates are the same.

“People At Work”: Check out a future column for the description. (Men and Women are at Work right now composing it.) Submission deadline: TBD. Dates: July 16-August 7. Opening reception: Sunday, July 17, 12-4 p.m.

ARTSPLASH: RAA’s annual festival of visual, literary and performing arts brings artists from around the country to the Rockaway Center for the Arts (RoCA). Submission deadline: TBD. Dates: September 10-October 16. Opening reception: tentatively scheduled for Sunday, September 11.

InkSplash: The last two years curator and master printmaker Christian Le Gars has brought the stunning work of an international cast of printmakers, many master printmakers, this year adding the work of RAA members, to sTudio 6 Gallery. The third year promises to be even more impressive. Submission deadline: TBD. Dates: October 9-(tentatively) November 6. Opening reception: Sunday, October 10, 12-4 p.m.

“Gifted”: RAA’s annual member holiday show. Submission deadline: TBD. Dates: November 19-December 18. Opening reception: Sunday, November 20, 12-4 p.m.

Other special events and programs will include the wildly popular camp kidsmART in July and the interactive Halloween extravaganza attended annually by hundreds of thrillingly frightened visitors, running October 29-31 in sTudio 7. The Writers Group will continue its warmly received presentations of original work. The 2011 RAA schedule will be sparkled by music events that include part of this city’s contribution to an international music celebration, Make Music NY.

May your New Year be creative and fulfilling … and a lot of fun.
