Toll Increase Takes Effect 12/30
The increases, which include those for the Cross Bay Bridge and the Marine Parkway Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge, will hit cash-paying motorists the hardest with an 18 percent toll increase on the two local bridges to bring the new fare to $3.25, a 50 cent increase.
The E-ZPass toll increase will not be as severe and non-residents can expect to see an increase from $1.71 to $1.80, while Rockaway and Broad Channel residents crossing either bridge will pay an increase from $1.13 to $1.19. Subsequent crossings on the Cross Bay Bridge after the first two paid trips within a single day will remain free for residents.
The cash toll for major crossings will rise to $6.50 each way, up from $5.50. The Verrazano Narrows Bridge toll will go up to $13 because drivers only pay one-way. E-ZPass drivers on the major crossings will also see the same five percent increase as the local bridges. The toll will rise from $4.57 to $4.80 with an E-ZPass.
MTA officials estimate an additional $106 million in yearly revenue will be generated from the increase. Motorists that do not want to commit to the EZPass can purchase an E-ZPass Onthe Go which works as a prepaid tag system.
