Will Not Be Shocked

Dear Editor,

I commend Mark Dana for his excellent, balanced letter in last week’s Wave. He is a true friend.

I hope Br. Tom is innocent, but if he is not, I will not be shocked. My greatest hero, right up there with Mother Theresa, was Fr. Bruce Ritter, founder of Covenant House, honored and world renowned for rescuing and sheltering homeless youths.

Then a young man reported to the press that he had been abused by him. The boy’s parents were horrified and publicly apologized for their son’s action.

But then many of the others that Fr. Ritter had abused had the courage to come forward and Fr. Ritter disappeared and died alone.

In this past decade, the explosive revelations of worldwide clergy sexual abuse, with even more shocking cover-up by their superiors, from chanceries all the way to the Vatican, have shaken us all.

Therefore, we cannot automatically assume the young boy is lying, as most people seem to think.

Let us pray for both the boy and Br.Trager as we await the outcome.
