This week and next, this column will give you a preview of exhibits and events RAA has planned for 2011. Artists: Start those creative juices flowing in the direction of the show themes; art lovers: Make your plans now for your 2011 weekends in beautiful Gateway National Recreation Area.

Following are the first exhibits on the 2011 schedule:

Reflections: RAA has invited artists to bring their ‘vision’ and imagination to the art of the reflected image. This exhibition is open to all media, including, but not limited to, watercolor, drawing, photography, sculpture, literature, painting, video, poetry, performance, film, and more. Mirrors, glass, polished surfaces, water are all just starting points for the intriguing and unusual repeated, doubled, distorted, duplicated, opposite and/or opposing images that capture the eye and mesmerize the mind.

Dates: January 15-February 6. Opening reception: Sunday, January 16, 12-4 p.m.

The Life of Still Objects: Artists are invited to capture the motion and emotion in the world of objects that may be still but never static. Media may include, but are not limited to, painting, drawing, mixed media, cartoon, kinetic art, photography, literature, video and more. Use your imagination to bring new interpretations of still life through inventive angles, contexts, subjects and juxtapositions of objects.

Submission deadline: January 21. Dates: February19-March 27. Opening reception: Sunday, February 20, 12-4 p.m.

Windows: How is the view and the meaning of a subject changed by what it is seen through? What is the relation between the observer and the observed? “Windows” invites artists to observe the world through a frame — a window, a spyglass, a port, a looking glass, a prism, a frosted pane … Imagination is the only limitation. Open to all media including, but not limited to, photography, painting, film, poetry, literature, sculpture, assemblage, printmaking, and more. Explore possibilities and bring the art in them to life.

Submission deadline: March 11. Dates: April 9-May 8 in sTudio 6 Gallery. Opening reception: April 10, 12-4 p.m.

Running simultaneously with “Windows” in sTudio 7 Gallery will be a Brooklyn Watercolor Society invitational exhibit and an exhibit of glass work by Patrick Clark and Renée Radenberg.

Filling out the schedule are “Nature: Fur, Flora, Feathers,” “Tomorrow’s Art Today,” “People at Work,” ARTSPLASH, InkSplash and “Gifted.” More about them next week and about other exciting events and programs to which to look forward in the coming year. (And the secret of how we choose which letters will be capitalized and which lower cased in the titles of our exhibits. We don’t use darts – honest!)

Renée Radenberg’s Solo Jewelry Show runs through December 30 at Beach Gallery (Sunlite Studio), 114-24 Rockaway Beach Boulevard. In addition to Radenberg’s jewelry, other beautiful arts and crafts are for sale at the gallery, including some extraordinary handmade glass pieces. Check it out for unique holiday gifts.
