St. Francis Christmas Holiday Basketball Classic Tips Off
With the Christmas break nearly here, the SFDS Intermediate girls continued their strong play with a 36-26 win over Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.
The SFDS Subnovice Blue Boys had another great outing last weekend, this time against Our Lady of Grace. Great passing by Ian Byrne and Dillon Ostrander led to baskets by Terence Marten and Jason Moore. Great shots were also taken by Christian Agoglia and Mike DeMarco. Joe Featherston, Cooper Nagle and Joe Tammaro led the defensive charge. The boys attacked the ball well and maintained their zones.
The SFDS Pee Wee Blue Boys finished the first half of the season with two huge wins against St. Mary Gate of Heaven and St. Camillus. Defense was the key to winning both of these games. The point guards from both visiting teams had a tough time handling the pressure from Kennedy Kirk, Jack Mullally and James Byrne. John Walsh, Mike Oricchio and Matt Dyer helped keep the visiting teams to one shot.
Offensively St. Francis on both days had numerous boys scoring. Terrence Moriarty and Jack Casey were the leading scorers with Dylan Abernethy, Bobby Baldrian, James Byrnes, Pat Ford, Connor Bradwisch and Jack Mullally all scoring key baskets to help the team win.
SFDS Novice Boys lost a tough away game to Our Lady of Trust on November 4, then bounced back to win their next 4 games, and an exhibition game vs. St. Agnes (47-20). The boys played Good Shepherd November 21 and won 20-6 with Timmy Connolly player of the game for great rebounding and scoring 4 points.
The boys took another win (30-5) at Our Lady of Grace on December 3 with Aidan Donahue’s dominant outside shooting to score 8 points for the team. The team continued their winning streak when they played Our Lady of Guadalupe (23-12) with Kenny Dean’s superb defense and multiple blocked shots, scoring 4 points.
SFDS Boys Novice played a tough game vs. St. Rose and won 29-23 with Griffin Skammel having multiple offensive rebounds resulting in 6 points.
The SFDS Bantams defeated Good Shepherd 39-15. Matt Coletta and Teddy Stathis shared scoring honors, each with 9. Joey Morelli cleaned the boards and dropped in 8. James Carlton initiated a potent Bantam fast break leading to easy baskets for his teammates.
The Rookies beat St. Thomas Apostle on Saturday and Good Shepherd on Sunday. The Intermediates lost a tough game against Visitation.
The St. Francis Christmas Tournament begins Friday night, December 17 at 6:00 p.m. with 4 games followed by a 9-game slate on Saturday (starting at 10:00) and 7 games on Sunday beginning at 12:00 p.m. Play continues Monday through Wednesday night and then resumes on Sunday, December 26. The championships are on Sunday, January 2, 2011.
St. Francis Subnovice Blue plays Saturday at 11:00 against St. Margaret with the Gold playing St. Rose at 4:45. The Pee Wee Gold plays Our Lady of Hope at 10:00 and the Blue plays St. Rose at 1:15. The Novice boys face the winner of St. Helen and Long Beach Catholic on Sunday at 5:45. The Bantams begin with a game against Blessed Sacrament of Staten Island, Sunday at 3:15.
The Rookies start with a tough matchup against Our Lady of the Angelus on Saturday at 2:30. The Intermediates will watch the first week before beginning on Sunday, December 26 against the winner of Blessed Sacrament and St. Stans.
The Christmas Tournament is an annual highlight with many former players coming back to the SFDS gym to check out the action. The atmosphere will be festive with performances by the SFDS Cheerleaders, Christmas music, raffles, and a full line of refreshments available in the kitchen.
