Special Athletes Keep Fit Through The Hot Summer
In June the Special Athletes enjoyed a fishing trip from the Verona Boat Club. After the catch of the day, everyone enjoyed a barbeque and a jump in the pool.
On July Fourth weekend, the Wounded Warriors visited Rockaway to enjoy the hospitality of this generous community. The athletes enjoyed a day of snorkeling with these warriors.
The athletes marched in a short parade with these heroes up to the home of Rita and Flip Mullen. The Mullens hosted their usual fund-raiser for the special athletes. They work all year long on making this event successful.
Many are deeply indebted to them, their seven children and many grandchildren.
This fundraiser was again supported by our magnanimous neighbors.
The Wounded Warriors and the athletes began a friendship that night.
Among the many volunteers at the fundraiser, Ann Marie Nelson, Pam O’Grady, and Ronnie Tyne tirelessly took care of raffles and Ann Bender worked all evening making sure all went well at the entrance.
At the end of July, the special athletes attended a Cyclones game. Paul Fitzpatrick threw out the first pitch to start the game. Fitzpatrick’s smiling face appeared on the huge scoreboard to the sound of thunderous applause.
This summer, the athletes had a volleyball team and a Little League softball team.
The special athletes are late in sharing the summer activities, but they want to be one of the first to wish all in Rockaway a MERRY CHRISTMAS.
