Treasurer: Ross Radusky

Members: John Grillo retains his seat on the board; new members are Anne Hourigan, Christian Le Gars, Dominique Roberts.

Dan Guarino ran unopposed and so retains his position as vice president.

The vacancy on the board left by Ross Radusky taking the reins as treasurer will be filled from the remaining candidates by an election of board members at the next board meeting, Monday, January 3, 2011.

Congratulations and good luck to these members. The economic challenges of our present society lend great importance to the knowledge, intelligence, savvy and commitment of the members of the board of an organization like RAA that needs to continue to serve the community and the myriad artists that community includes. We look forward to the added dimensions these new board directors bring to RAA.

To those who were not elected, we thank you for the unselfish service you have so generously given to RAA; we hope your dedication to RAA remains unabated. We need you all; our community needs you all.

The attendance at these elections was the largest in RAA history, demonstrating the strength and viability of this organization. Great thanks to all those who cared enough to come out on a windy, snowy evening.

Special thanks to Councilman Eric Ulrich for showing his support of RAA by attending the elections meeting/holiday party. “Arts,” he said, “are very important to me.” He emphasized that, given the state of the economy, he will do anything he can do to support the arts. Especially today, he said, when families may not be able to afford going to the city for their arts, a community relies on local groups like RAA to bring arts and culture to the people. The councilman says he wishes to support that. He further explained, “So many kids rely on kidsmART. Funding for after-school programs like kidsmART should be baselined in the budget, so each year they shouldn’t have to fight for all or nothing.”

We thank you, Councilman Ulrich, for demonstrating your commitment to RAA, and look forward in the New Year to the tangible results of that commitment.

Kudos once more to the Exhibitions Committee, most especially Janet Dever and Penelope Atheras, and all those who contributed to the gorgeously delicious tables that did RAA proud.

Saturday, December 18, RAA will be celebrating Winter Solstice. At 6:30 p.m., the avant garde theater group Dzieci will perform “Fool’s Mass,” their tale of “a motley group of medieval village idiots … full of buffoonery and comic audience participation.” With a $15 suggested donation and a party to follow, “Fool’s Mass,” “with choral singing of sacred hymns and chants, combines to create a work which travels from the ridiculous to the sublime.” At 8 p.m. the Winter Solstice Concert Event begins, presenting bands and solo performers to bring us to (well, in a few days) the moment the days turn longer and the nights shorter. All proceeds go to support the work of RAA.

RAA artists Daniela Sessa, Arthur Skowron and Yuri Yurov have an exhibit of their work at the Gravesend branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, 303 Avenue X. “Verso,” curated by Boris Ioselev, is on view through February 7, 2011.

The New Year brings new exhibitions to the galleries of RAA. Following are details about the first:

“Reflections” deadline for submission of entries has been extended to today, Friday, December 17. Exhibition dates: January 15-February 6, 2011.

Reflections”: RAA invites artists to bring their ‘vision’ and imagination to the art of the reflected image. This exhibition is open to all media, including, but not limited to, watercolor, drawing, photography, sculpture, literature, painting, video, poetry, performance, film and more. Mirrors, glass, polished surfaces, water are all just starting points for the intriguing and unusual repeated, doubled, distorted, duplicated, opposite and/or opposing images that capture the eye and mesmerize the mind. Send us your best.
