Local Gets 2 To 6 In Cedarhurst DUI
Gehlert Barrios, 21, had pleaded guilty to manslaughter, driving while intoxicated and assault. He was sentenced this week at First District Court in Hempstead, New York.
Nassau County prosecutors said Barrios was speeding in his 2004 Nissan on Rockaway Turnpike on January 30 at approximatively 4:30 a.m. when he crashed into a Ford van making a right turn at the intersection of Rugby Road. A passenger in the back seat of Barrios’ car, his 30-yearold friend, Anthony Morales, was killed. After the accident he was rushed to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital but was pronounced dead at 9:35 a.m.
The front seat passenger in Barrios’ car, a 21-year-old male and the 50-yearold driver of the Ford van that was rear-ended by Barrios both suffered neck and back injuries. They were treated at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital and later released. Barrios’ blood-alcohol content was 0.09 percent four hours after the crash.
Upon his arrest police had charged him with second degree manslaughter, second degree vehicular manslaughter, second degree assault, reckless endangerment, reckless driving and driving while intoxicated.
