Local Martial Artists Win Gold At Jacob Javits Center
The MMA Expo and the Renzo Gracie NO-GI Tournament took place on November 12 and 13 at the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan. Many MMA enthusiasts and martial arts competitors turned out for this twoday event. There were seminars from such luminaries in their fields as grappling great Marcelo Garcia, Judo legend Jimmy Pedro, BJJ and MMA legend Renzo Gracie, Muay Thai champion Phil Nurse and others.
The highlight of the weekend was the exciting action on the grappling mats as part of the Renzo Gracie No Gi Open Tournament. This tournament attracted competitors from all the top schools in the area, including Marcleo Garcia, Vitor Shaolin Ribeiro and Renzo Gracie Manhattan. Eight local Rockaway residents, all teammates from Team Renzo Gracie Rockaway, also took the challenge and fought some exceptional matches.
Sean Murphy won gold in his division after winning three very hard fought matches and defeating two of his three competitors by submission. Sean demonstrated great composure and technical skill in overcoming his adversaries on the mat.
Jason Moore also won Gold in his division. Jason displayed excellent guard passing and positional control in his victories.
Other members of Team Renzo Gracie Rockaway also did very well. Juan Velasquez demonstrated superb grappling technique to reach the finals, where he suffered a tough loss. Additionally, Ian Harbison earned Silver and Tim Robinson earned Bronze for their efforts. This was an excellent showing for the Jiu-Jitsu athletes at Team Renzo Gracie Rockaway Beach, even though the school has been open for less than one year.
