Full Slate Of RAA December Events
There may be a chill in the air, but it is hardly getting a chance to settle on Fort Tilden as things heat up with the Rockaway Artists Alliance’s Big 4 December Events. Music, theatre, performance, and the literary and visual arts will come together for a year end blast, all in the warm comfort at RAA’s sTudio 7 (T-7) Gallery.
Seaside in Concert, an RAA Writers Group performance event, the amazing Dzieci acting troupe and a Winter Solstice music event will make the season bright and invite all to enjoy a world of the sights and sounds for which RAA has become famous.
First up on Saturday December 11, the popular group Seaside will offer up their sheer vocal power and prowess in concert, with all donated proceeds going to benefit the RAA. Long appearing on stages in Rockaway and throughout the metropolitan area, Seaside, backed by multitalented instrumentalists, boasts singers from the original Coasters, Flamingos, Revlons, Drifters and more. Seaside in Concert will feature an exciting mix of rock and roll, R&B, pop, jazz and more. The show starts at 4 p.m. in the sTudio 7 Gallery.
Following music with words, the Rockaway Artists Alliance Writers Group will present another of their highly successful performance events. On Sunday, December 12 from 2-4 p.m. they will bring to the T-7 stage an ever interesting mix of original poetry, prose, short plays and music, all written, produced and performed by members of the group. Refreshments will be served. Early attendees will also be treated to a live musical “opening act” starting at 1:30 p.m. All will also get a last chance to view “Gifted,” RAA’s latest exhibition. Gallery doors open at 12 noon.
Well known at Fort Tilden for their unique and powerful performances of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth,” the actors and singers of Dzieci will introduce “Fool’s Mass.” On Saturday, December 18 at 6:30 p.m. this gifted group will raise the curtain and weave their tale of “a motley group of medieval village idiots … full of buffoonery and comic audience participation.” With a $15 suggested donation and a party to follow, “Fool’s Mass,” choral singing of sacred hymns and chants are woven in to “create a work which travels from the ridiculous to the sublime.” Commenting on highly moving previous performances, audiences have said they have never seen anything like it.
Marking the finale of RAA’s Big 4 December Events, the Winter Solstice Concert Event marks the turning of one season into the next. Celebrating the advent of the shortest day and the longest night of the year, the concert will get things going early on Saturday, December 18 starting at 8 p.m. From all points of the Rockaways and beyond, a host of popular bands and solo performers will sing and play well into the evening. The RAA guarantees that the Winter Solstice Concert Event is one show not to be missed.
Even as their Big 4 December Events are rolling in, the RAA also regularly presents its Thursday Open Mike Music Nights from 7:30 p.m. onward all year round. And they have now added the growingly popular Gen M, which opens the doors exclusively to teenage musicians to meet, play, sing, perform, listen and be heard. A great Friday night destination and a solid base for up and coming talent, Gen M starts at 8 p.m. every week of the year.
There’s plenty of parking. Admission to all events is free, however, donations will be gladly accepted.
All proceeds go towards expanding RAA’s full roster of programs and supporting the facilities that make them possible.
The invitation is open to come and enjoy. With their Big 4 December Events the Rockaway Artists Alliance is once again serving up a multiplicity of reasons why Rockaway really is the place to be.
