Historical Views of the Rockaways

Do You Know All The Parts in This Puzzle Picture?
From The Rockaway Museum
Commentary by Emil Lucev, Curator
Dedicated To The Memory Of Leon S. Locke

For almost a quarter of a century now, Historical Views of the Rockaways has presented many photographs and articles covering our past history, and then some, with specials that come up.

So! this week you can test your memory on what you have learned to date, with this aerial oblique view of the old seaside section of Rockaway Beach, which contained Seaside Amusement Park (left), Steeplechase Amusement Park (center) and Rockaways’ Playland (right).

Here are some clues to start you off. Broad Channel is at the top left, and then comes Jamaica Bay and Cross Bay Bridge and the LIRR trestle and the marsh above Arverne (left to right). At the bottom is the Atlantic Ocean and the nice wide beach of the mid 1930s, the year this photo was taken. Beach 103 Street is at the bottom left and Beach 94 Street is at right center (old P.S. 44 Buildings). So! Keep that computer between your ears in good shape … and go for it.
