Christmas Tree Lighting Throughout Community

Christmas Tree lighting ceremonies abound in the Rockaway community in the coming weeks.

On Friday, December 3 at 5:30 p.m., the tree on the mall in front of the Beach 116 Street firehouse will be lit.

Sponsors and participants of the event include Brown’s Hardware, the Chamber of Commerce of the Rockaways, John Lepore and Ira Seplow, the Belle Harbor Steakhouse (which will be serving free hot chocolate), the Rockaway Theatre Company Kids, who will perform, the Department of Parks and Recreation, Maureen Walsh Properties and Rich Keane, who actually lights the tree.

There will be refreshments and Christmas carols. The Second Annual Broad Channel Christmas Tree Lighting will take place on Wednesday, December 8 at 6 p.m. at the back field. Performances by the Girl Scouts and PS 47 chorus will be enjoyed by all in attendance. Hot cocoa, cookies and other baked goods will be available as will candy canes.

A special visit from Santa is expected – all followed by the lighting of the tree by “Mayor” Timothy Hanning. On Thursday, December 9 at 4:30 p.m., there will be a Holiday Lighting Ceremony at the intersection of Beach 20 Street (Central Avenue) and Mott Avenue in Far Rockaway.

The tree lighting will be hosted by Capital One Bank, the Rockaway Development and Revitalization Corporation, the Deerfield Area Civic

Association, Community Board 14, Young Israel of Bayswater and Madelaine Chocolate Novelties.

The tree lighting will celebrate Christmas, Chanukah and Kwanzaa.
