From The Artists Studio
The December general meeting is a very special one, as it is every year. On the 13th of the month, elections will be held for members of the board of directors and officers of the board. You must be a paid member to vote in the elections, so make sure you have paid your dues. Call the RAA office to check your membership status. After organization business has been completed, a holiday party will ensue. And as most of us know, each year that party features the now-famous and highly an-ticipated GRAB BAG. No longer one of your favorite possessions? Not the sentimental value once held by that cheesy but charming piece of jewelry your former boyfriend (the louse) gave you? The signature on that painting you bought on New Year’s morning that looked like “Gauguin” but was actually “Gaubuin”? Ready to unload it?
The pretty earrings you are ready to share with someone else. Treasures and terrors that an individual with a creative mind might appreciate will be placed on a special table from which fellow travelers may choose. Bring a throw-away, find a gift; bring a gift, find a gift of a different color. So start looking through your basements and hope chests now, my friends. And remember, you have to bring a gift to choose a gift.
“RAA on Jamaica Bay,” curated by RAA President Geoff Rawling, will feature the work of several artists in a variety of mediums, interpreting and celebrating the natural beauty of Jamaica Bay and its surroundings. Sunday, December 5 attend a Meet the Artists gathering at the visitor center of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Time to be announced. The exhibit will be on view at the center from the end of November through the end of February. More information in a future column. Stay tuned.
“Gifted,” the RAA member holiday exhibit, continues its run at sTudio 7 Gallery, RoCA at Fort Tilden through Sunday, December 12. This fine show presents artwork that would make for unique and special gifts this holiday season.
Igor Gushchin’s landscape and still life placed in a landscape environment transport the viewer to a stylized, colorful world where she or he is engaged in the simplest and the most esoteric ways. Carol Rickey’s still lifes use rich, contrasting colors and offbeat compositions. In “March of the Wooden Cupcakes,” a still life with a definite sense of humor, objects that one would not usually see in a painting are set up as a kind of invading army. In the interesting compositions of four still lifes by Susan De Castro, the objects are united by brushstrokes that flow through and around the dynamic subjects. Penelope Atheras has fashioned four exquisite stained glass pieces – two boxes and two glass sculptures. Each is more breathtaking than the other. See Fort Tilden Highlights for hours and other details of “Gifted.”
The memorial service held for Patrick Clark’s mother, Mary Kay, last Friday at St. Francis de Sales Church, was a fitting celebration of the life of a fine, lovely and loving woman. Patrick was joined by his nephew Chris, who came from Washington state. Delivering the eulogy himself, Patrick desribed his mother as compassionate, creative and courageous.
