Mettler Ignored The Facts

Dear Editor,

Joan Mettler’s thoughtful analysis of the Juan Williams “Muslim” incident went into great detail absolving NPR and explaining her reasoned objections to Mr. Williams’ behavior and subsequent contract with Fox News.

Mettler also saw fit to use the opportunity to lecture her fellow citizens about their responsibilities to temper their discourse when disagreeing with her opinions and for good measure to take a shot at “right wing” commentators with whom she disagrees. That would all be fine, except for the one minor fact – Juan Williams made his now famous statement while speaking to Bill O’Reilly on Fox News, not on NPR (which is about as issue neutral as the Huffington Post). So Poor Juan was not fired for making a controversial statement on NPR, he was fired by NPR for making the statement on Fox News.

Mettler’s entire grand explanation merely ignored the actual facts. I think Mettler’s point was something about not inciting others with nonfactual partisan rhetoric. Point taken.
