From The Artists Studio
There are treasures to be found in “Gifted”; treasures to be brought home for the holiday season, for yourself or for those you love. RAA’s annual holiday member exhibit opened this past weekend, unveiling a variety of excellent artworks.
Ludmila Vaynberg’s talents continue to amaze this viewer. Four extraordinary oils on illustration board depict scenes on the water’s edge. In paint texture and brushstroke, Vaynberg achieves a fluidity in the medium, on this particular format, that is delicious, sensuous and breathtaking; completely appropriate for the subject. In “4” and “5,” weeping cherry trees in full bloom drape over the water as if flowing into their liquid, life-giving mother source.
Temah Garbaty works in India ink and natural dyes on bark paper to render flowing, organic abstract designs reminiscent of the art of the country of India; fluid yet graphic in their sensibility. Garbaty says she has created artwork that abstractly looks like words, which she believes to come spontaneously from her subconscious.
Diane Palihnich’s work combines watercolor and pastel. “Grape Vine” exhibits an engaging flatness; like a beautiful wallpaper design that is elegant and very alive; that leads the viewer’s eye across the warm autumnal subtle and bright colors and objects of the still life.
Nancy Egan’s photographs take the simple and turns it monumental; takes the simple and makes it profound. Stephanie Schmidt’s two photographs of beach scenes take full advantage of the power and subtlety that can be expressed in black and white. Through the use of dark, light, composition and printing choices, the depth and emotional and visual texture achieved by Schmidt are stunning. As you may have read in last week’s Wave, Patrick Clark’s mother, Mary Kay, died on November 8. Patrick was the first president of RAA and is a friend and supporter of artists and of his community. Our sympathy and love to our dear friend, his family and all who loved Mary Kay. A Memorial Mass in celebration of her life will be held at St. Francis de Sales R.C. Church tonight, Friday, November 19 at 7 p.m.
