SFDS Cross-Country Team Competes In CYO Diocesan Championships

Sixty-three runners from St. Francis de Sales postponed their trick-ortreating rounds and competed in the Diocesan Championship cross-country meet on October 31.

Competing in seven age and gender divisions against fifteen parishes, SFDS’s Senior, Bantam, and Novice boys and Novice girls teams won Diocesan champ ionships.

In the senior boys race, Bard Featherston, Denis Murtagh and Alex Goldberg placed second, sixth and seventh, for 15 points. With St. Anne’s runners placing first and third, coaches doing the math anxiously awaited their third runner. When he came in 16th place, SFDS knew they had clinched the gold.

The junior girls team of Colleen Gallagher, Gwyn McGee and Fiona Brackley placed fifth in their highly competitive division. The SFDS bantam girls placed fourth in their division behind the strong running of Olivia Murray, Paige McDade, Emily Richter and Anna Hickey.

James McManus won the bantam boysrace with Joseph Alessandro second and Aidan Donahue third to win the gold. The novice girls won their Diocesan Championship with excellent racing by Catherine Lunny, Caroline Gifford, Beth Dunn, Shaun Smith, Mollie Abernethy, Katie Roventina, Fallon Brackley, Shannon Tuffey, Fionia Mullen, Portia Brackley, Margaret McIvor and Alexa Giambra.

The junior boys placed seventh in their highly competitive division behind the efforts of Jimmy Lunny, Greg Henschel, Bobby Dunn and Peter Tuffey. The bantam boys scored a perfect 6 to win their championship with James McManus, Joseph Alessandro, and Aidan Donahue coming in first, second and third, followed by Matt Mc- Dade, Terence Moriarty, Dylan Abernethy, Patrick Murtagh, Danny Paparelli, Kevin Connelly, Griffin Brackley, Jack McDade, Terence McFadden, and Patrick Connelly.

Kiernan Smith broke the tape and was followed by Michael Tuffey and Christian Zorino-Rodriguez for a perfect score to win the novice boys Diocesan championship. The novice boys team was led to their first place gold, also with a perfect score, by Kiernan Smith, Michael Tuffey and Christian Zirino-Rodriguez captured first to third place.

The rest of the novice team of Liam McIvor, Shawn O’Keefe, Kyle Cornish, Danny Cornish, Joseph Featherston, Nico Allen, Gerard McManus, Cooper Nagel, Darrin LaMantia, Dominick Maiorano, Patrick Ayrovainen, Matt Glynn, Peter Maiorano, Joseph Mortellaro, Brian Charles, Lenny Mannino, Sean Peter Mullen, Michael O’Sullivan, Aiden Keane, Sean Richter, Charlie DeGrechie, Charlie Smith, Thomas Burke and Thomas Charles all ran strong.
