CYO Basketball Season Begins

The 2010-11 St. Francis de Sales CYO basketball season is underway as the girls began on October 23 and the boys last weekend. St. Francis will once again have 16 teams competing in grades 3 through 8. Home games are played at the St. Francis gym and the season will conclude with diocesan championships on February 27 for girls and March 27 for boys. St Francis will also host the Christmas tournament for boys and the Peggy Boyle tournament after the season for girls.

SFDS 3rd Grade Boys Blue & Gold teams paired off last weekend for their CYO debut. Both teams were excited to play each other in their first CYO game. The teams showed superb offensive and defensive skills as well as shooting.

The Gold team looks forward to visiting St. Patrick’s next week and the Blue will be visiting Mary Mother of Jesus. Good luck boys!

SFDS Boys Novice began the season with a win as they defeated Blessed Trinity. SFDS started the first quarter quickly, with most of the players scoring in the first half and the entire team playing extremely tough defense. John Moran finished with nine points, including a halftime buzzer beater three point shot. Excellent defense and offensive rebounding were provided by Kenny Dean and Jag Guidarelli. TJ Powderly stepped up at the point and at shooting guard after bruising his knee early in the game.

The sixth grade boys bantam team dropped their first game, losing to St. Patrick’s 42-37. The score was close throughout the contest but in the end, St. Pat’s prowess on the foul line made the difference. St. Francis had a balanced scoring attack with Teddy Stathis hitting for 12 points, Matt Coletta 10, Peter Tuffey 6 and Ben Edwards 4. Joey Morelli was easily the best rebounder in the game.

All of the teams will hit the road this weekend as The Wizard of Oz visits the St. Francis gym.
