SJEH Appoints Fenster As Gastroenterology Chief

Jay S. Fenster, MD, Chief of Gastroenterology, St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. Jay S. Fenster, MD, Chief of Gastroenterology, St. John’s Episcopal Hospital. St. John’s Episcopal Hospital recently named Jay Fenster, MD, Chief of Gastroenterology. Dr. Fenster will have administrative, clinical and teaching responsibilities in gastroenterology.

“We are very pleased to announce Dr. Fenster’s appointment as Chief of Gastroenterology,” said John Gupta, Chief Executive Officer SJEH. “A physician of Dr. Fenster’s skill, high caliber and reputation is a welcome addition to our staff,” Gupta added.

Dr. Fenster has many years of experience and an established practice based in Cedarhurst, NY. He received his undergraduate degree magna cum laude from Brooklyn College and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society. He received his medical degree from State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. He did a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in gastroenterology at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. He is board certified in both internal medicine and gastroenterology.

His appointment marks a return of sorts for Dr. Fenster who grew up in Far Rockaway. He said that he was looking forward to coming back because “St. John’s is striving for excellence and an exciting place to which to come back. The Hospital is making an effort to become a center of excellence and I’m glad to be a part of the revitalized mission.”

Dr. Fenster has plans to make the endoscopy unit, in particular, a state-of-theart, patient-friendly unit. While the endoscopy unit already has the capability to do ERCP - endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography - he intends to add endoscopy ultrasound and capsule endoscopy. In capsule endoscopy, the patent swallows a capsule that contains a tiny camera that enables the doctor to see areas of the small bowel on video that are otherwise difficult to see.

Dr. Fenster remarked that he was proud of St. John’s academic gastroenterology fellowship program, which is affiliated with State University of New York Downstate Medical Center. St. John’s gastroenterology program participates in the training of SUNY Downstate gastroenterology fellows.

He also intends to make the process of having a colonoscopy at St. John’s as simple as possible. If found in a timely manner, many cases of colon cancer are preventable.

Dr. Fenster is also a member of several professional organizations including American College of Gastroenterology and American Gastrointestinal Association.
