Historical Views of the Rockaways

Another Blast From The Past … Far Rockaway’s Ostend Beach
From The Rockaway Museum Commentary by Emil Lucev, Curator Dedicated To The Memory Of Leon S. Locke

In many past Historical Views, we have spoken of Ostend Beach in Far Rockaway, named after Ostend in the European country of Belgium. Ostend, at the eastern extreme of the Rockaway peninsula, opened in 1908, complete with a casino, and lasted well into the last century. In the 1960s the present O’ Donohue Park was opened on the site, and that of its neighbor, Roche’s Beach.

Today we feature an ad from Ostend Beach, telling what the place had to offer and a way to get there by bus. There was ample parking for cars as well.
