Teams Honor Ryan Rudden In Eighth Annual Tournament

Winning team: Rockaway Possums. Winning team: Rockaway Possums. The eighth annual Ryan Rudden roller hockey tournament was held on Saturday, October 30 with great weather and the best competition yet,

Ryan was a great kid with a beautiful smile and infectious laugh and by the turnout at the rink he is deeply missed and never forgotten. Once the puck dropped, the action was fast and furious with eight solid teams vying for the cup.

The Possums edged the Ryan Rudden All-Stars in the first semifinal in a shootout with Tom O’Connor hitting the post and Brian Carlton scoring last for the win. The N.Y. Metro Moose defeating the Staten Island Beers 3-0 to advance to the final.

In the final, Mike Gambino opened the scoring for the Possums to take a 1-0 lead. Brian Sica scored to make it 2-0. The Moose playing hard cut it to 2-1 with a goal by forward Steve Kelly, but with only a minute to go, Carlton sealed the win with an open net goal. Goalie John Vittoratos was named tournament M.V.P with outstanding play.

The tournament also provided an opportunity to honor a longtime Rockies coach, William Flaherty. He was a dedicated member of the Rockies board who gave countless hours to the youth of Rockaway. Kasey Brouder painted a beautiful mural on the container at the rink to honor both Ryan and Bill’s memory.

The after party was a great success with Boardwalk Bagels (Danny) doing a tremendous job catering and a ton of great prizes led by a surfboard donated by John Nash of Bikran Yoga.

The tournament would like to acknowledge the RIBS, ROCKAWAY JETTY, SFDS Summer Classic for their generous donations.
