InkSplash Closing Reception And Lecture
Commentary by Susan Hartenstein

The next RAA general meeting on Monday, November 8 (see Fort Tilden Highlights box) will include nominations for the board of directors, elections to be held in December. RAA is looking for new nominees; our Nominating Committee will be reviewing applications. Certain requirements need to be fulfilled in order to qualify to be nominated. If you are interested, please contact the office. For more information you can also contact Sophia Skeans at sophiaskeans@aol.com.

Special feature of the next general meeting will be original works written, produced and performed by members of the RAA Writers Group. Previous presentations by the group have had rave reviews. The scheduled works are as follows:

1) “I Couldn’t Ask For Another” or The Potato Salad Monologue. Scene

from the short play, “Groove Is in the Heart.” Written and read by Pamela Popeson.

2) Poetry – Written and read by Ed Broderick.

3) “No Countries – A Modern Fairy Tale.” Short story. Written and read by Mary Najeddine.

4) “Borrowing From Peter.” Short play. Written by Maureen McNelis. Actors: Tommy Burke, Dan Guarino.

5) Poetry – Written and read by Elgin Bolling.

6) “The Map Maker.” Short play. Written by Elizabeth Guarino. Actors: Tommy Burke, Dan Guarino.

InkSplash, the excellent printmaking exhibit in sTudio 6 Gallery, is in its final weekend. Sunday, November 7 is the closing reception, from 12 to 4 p.m. Special to the reception at 2 p.m. is a discussion and ‘Q and A’ presented by the artists of the show in which they will explain the techniques used in their works. Etching, woodcut, aquatint, chine collé and monoprint are among the many techniques used, frequently in combination and often including other mediums like watercolor and photography. This is a show not to be missed. As a bonus, artist Esther A. Grillo has added a print of hers for the final weekend. “Howard Beach” is an etching on rag paper. The conceptual work gains in power the longer the viewer looks at it.

Morristown, New Jersey is not so far. Awaiting the visitor is a town of lovely architecture and a large, air and light filled exhibition space called the Atrium Art Gallery, located in the Administration and Records Building, Court Street. Best of all, inside that gallery is a new solo show of the art of Yuri Yurov. Paintings, prints, photographs and ceramics. Multi-layered realities, levels of meaning and textures, mythology and symbolism are woven by Yurov in a dazzling display of techniques and mediums. The art is extraordinary. The work of several other artists is also on display in the four-floor Atrium Gallery through January 12, 2011. The gallery is run by the Arts Council of the Morris Area. More about the Council and the gallery in a future column. www.morrisarts.org
