BCAC Pony Shamrocks Lose Heartbreaker To Levittown Red Devils

By John J. Nolan

On Saturday night, October 23, BCAC Shamrocks Pony Division lost a close game to the Levittown Red Devils, 37–32. The Shamrocks now have two wins, four losses and one tie.

Things looked good early on. Robert Kollmer ran the ball up the middle for a seven yard gain, and on the third play of the game quarterback Jordan Jessup went around the end for a 30- yard touchdown run.

The Shamrocks extra point attempt failed with an incomplete pass in the end zone. But the lead did not last long when Levittown blockers cleared the way for their own running back to do the same. Their extra point attempt was stopped by Michael Edwards and John Nolan.

On the next possession, quarterback Jordan Jessup handed the ball to 44 Express who ran the ball for a 67-yard touchdown. The extra point was run in by Kollmer pushing the defense into the end zone with the help of the offensive line consisting of Charlie Bostwich, Michael Edwards, Kyle Hilgendorf, Kieran Mills, Bobby Martin, Jose Santana and Sal Lalumia.

Levittown scored the next two touchdowns but both extra point attempts were stopped, the first by Kollmer and the other by 44 Express who slapped the ball away from a would-be receiver.

The Shamrocks showed great resilience at the end of the first half, marching the ball down the field with time running off of the clock. The drive was capped with a 7-yard run by John Nolan who scored his first touchdown of the year ending the half with a 19– 19 tie.

The defense missed the play of their big man, Mathew Butler, who provided his support on the sideline cheering his team on. The defensive line was played by Salvatore Lalumia (4 tackles), Michael Edwards (4 tackles), Mathew Valentino (2 tackles), Jose Santana (6 tackles), Nicholas Maltese (2 tackles), John Nolan (6 tackles), Kieran Mills (2 tackles), Vincent Cavanagh (2 tackles), Charlie Bostwich (5 tackles), and Bobby Martin who stopped an extra point attempt and assisted on 4 other tackles.

They had a tough time stopping the Levittown running backs, although it was not without outstanding effort. Kyle Hilgendorf was moved to the linebacker position where he landed some big hits and had (6 tackles) of his own; 44 Express ended the game (8 tackles), Jordan Jessup had 12 tackles with 4 of them for a big loss of yardage and Kollmer had 14 tackles, 3 for a loss of yardage.

The safety position was played by Vincent Visconti, Michael Reardon and David Cancel who all assisted on tackles, but Steven Kenny stood out in this position making 7 tackles including a solos tackle to save a touchdown by Levittown’s big running back as he was turning up field.

The second half started with the Red Devils taking a 25-19 lead. The Shamrocks came back with a 30-yard run by Bobby Martin that was capped off with a 7-yard touchdown run by Kollmer to tie the score. After going down another score by Levittown the Shamrocks again began to drive the ball down the field, but a fumble after a hard fought 35-yard gain was returned for an 80- yard touchdown which gave the Levittown Red Devils a 12-point lead.

The Shamrocks again fought back with 44 Express catching a 15-yard pass from Jessup and Bobby Martin following the blocking of John Nolan with a 30-yard catch and run into the end zone for a touchdown. The extra point was run in by Kollmer, cutting Levittown’s lead to 37-32.

On the next possession the Shamrocks held the Red Devils on three consecutive plays giving Levittown fourth down and 9 yards for the first. But a comeback would not be when the tired defense gave up a heartbreaking 11-yard run and Levittown was able to run out the rest of the clock.

The BCAC Pony Shamrocks’ next game is against North Babylon on Sunday, October 31, at 1:00 p.m. in Babylon, Long Island.
