Paez In The Wrong Party

Dear Editor,

Dr. Harold Paez should be commended for entering a serious dialogue on the issues facing our community and nation. Unfortunately, he is a part of the Republican Party which has chosen to try to block serious attempts “unanimously voting no on New York State budgets in the State Senate and trying to filibuster loan guarantees for small business and middle class tax cuts that they claim to support in the US Senate.

Our economy is in trouble. Americans make few of the products we actually use. Try to buy American made clothes, kitchen utensils or TV sets. The contributions of working Americans support the pension systems that support retired Americans. Shrinking employment will deplete all our pension systems and the tax base for all our services. Pensions that allow retired Americans to live in dignity did not wreck our economic system. The decision by the Big Three auto companies to produce overpriced gas guzzlers brought down two of the Big Three. Trade policies that encourage American companies to move their factories overseas or import from foreign suppliers destroy American jobs. California adopted a system where one third of the legislature can block taxes needed to meet their expenses. If we rebuild our industrial system and maintain a tax system based on the ability to pay we will be able to maintain a decent retirement for public and private employees.

Public transportation is supported by tax funds everywhere. New York State and New York City have reduced their contribution to the MTA in every recent budget. Until we rebuild our industrial base and collect taxes from residents in all parts of our region, we will continue to face cuts in service and increases in tolls and fares.
