A Government That Protects Our Liberty

Dear Editor,

I read with great interest your cover story of the mayor’s proposal to ban smoking in city parks. I agree with Councilman Dan Halloran that this is just another example of government (and especially this mayor) trying to control the minutia of our lives. The “compromise” suggested by Councilman Eric Ulrich is nothing more than negotiating the terms of surrendering whatever little liberty we have left. I am disappointed he would even offer such a compromise. He should know better.

In an analogous matter I just discovered that it is a crime to fish in Rockaway without a permit.

Why? Is there a shortage of fish that must be rationed? Is there a shortage of beach on which to stand as you cast your line? Is there a public safety issue that needs government intervention?

Yet government has made fishing illegal unless you pay tribute.

Someday I hope we will have a government that preserves our liberty instead of looking for new ways to take it away.
