Shamrocks Entertain North Babylon Bulldogs

The BCAC Midget Shamrocks were home this past Saturday for their first home game of the year under the lights. The stadium was packed with fans and the Shamrocks did their best to entertain them. Their opponents were the Bulldogs from North Babylon.

The Shamrocks defense did their best throughout the game but two broken plays in the first half led to two early scores for the Bulldogs. Johnny “Mad Man” Weiss led all Shamrocks with five tackles on the day, while Bryan Bostwick and Dillon Ostrander each had a sack. Danny Clark, Joey Iannello, Jack Ward, Tyler Strika, Kevin Koestner, Sebastian Frieberg, Luke Jackowski, Peter Meehan and Andrew Visconti contributed with big tackles throughout the game as well.

The offense showed signs of brilliance at times, led by an all-around ground attack. The Shamrocks gained a total of 145 yards on the ground, led by Timmy McCabe (64 yards) and Ian Byrne (48 yards). The offensive line blocked until their arms fell off, led by Michael O’Connell, Matt McCabe, Thomas Houck and Jack Collins.

Coach Gene took a page out of Pass-happy guru Pete Ward’s playbook and decided to go to the air.

The first pass came from halfback McCabe, an 8-yard completion. The next one was the big one, as quarterback Jack Allen threw a 12-yard touchdown pass right before the half to bring the score to 13-7. The emerging star of the game was newly appointed tight end Michael “Antonio Gates” Henglein, as he caught two passes for 20 yards and a touchdown. The second half was not a good one for the Shamrocks as they were shut out and lost 25-7.

This week’s Shamrock Fan of the Week is Mrs. Clark. Mrs. Clark shows up every week in a green #6 jersey and screams in the stands louder than Coach Kenny.

This crack reporter apologizes for not getting Mrs. Clark’s first name in time for this article, but he was too busy eating her delicious ice cream cone cupcakes – they were amazing.

There has been a lot of talk about the guidelines for Fan of the Week. Well the way not to win it is by showing up two minutes before half time and leaving three minutes into the third quarter. I will not mention any names, but you know who you are!

The best way to win Fan of the Week is by bringing junk food for Coach Sean. This week Coach Gene feels that the Shamrocks can make a strong finish, with only three games left on the year.

This Sunday, the BCAC Midgets go on the road to face Valley Stream at 12 p.m.
