Boarders Surf Shop Rides Wave Into First Place Tie

The Rockaway Rockies Major Division regular season has turned into a very tight battle. On Sunday, October 17, Boarders Surf Shop knocked off Elegante Restaurant convincingly in the early game and then lost a shoot out to The Wave, 7-6, in the late game.

The three points earned by Boarders put them into a tie for first place with The Wave with 6 points each. The league can tighten up even more next week. If Elegante Restaurant (2 points) can sweep both of their games, it will make for a three team log jam for first place.

The Boardwalk Bagels sponsored Minor Division started off the day with another great game. Both the Red and Blue teams played extremely well. Josh Montero had a penalty shot as time wound down in the game for the Red team but the game was highlighted by the play of the girls on both teams. Chrissy and Caroline Diehm on the Blue team and Josie Payne, Bridget Leahy and Caleigh Murphy on the Red team skated relentlessly and showed the boys how tough you have to be to play hockey.

The Rockies hockey league features two leagues with boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 13 years old. The Minor division incorporates the younger children and has two teams that face off against each other every week. The Major division has three teams that will play a competitive season ending with playoffs and a league championship.

The Rockies have boys and girls from all over the peninsula and Broad Channel ranging in skills from very competitive travel ice hockey players to novice skaters just learning the game. All the games are played on Sunday mornings at the rink on Beach 108 Street and Shore Front Parkway. Each division also has one practice session during the week. If anybody is interested in signing up for the Rockies, please come down to the rink on Sunday morning.
