St. Francis’ Fifth Grade Girls Edge Blessed Trinity In Soccer Thriller
The Fifth Grade Girls ventured to Blessed Trinity. SFDS was strong in the first half, controlling the ball in front of the BT goal. Midway into the half, Jessica Buckley blasted a penalty kick into the right corner giving SFDS the lead, 1-0. Taylor Slakman and Claire Hughes anchored the defense. In the second half, SFDS could not convert any opportunities to increase the tally. Blessed Trinity was able to slip one past Shannon Dziuk to tie the game and breathe new life into their play. With two minutes left, Breanne McDonnell took aim and it was Maddie McDade who followed the shot and hit the back of the net for the win 2-1.
The First Grade Girls (Team #1) defeated Hope 6-0. The offense was led by Claudia Kelly (3 goals), Paige O’Neill (2 goals) and Kailey Aiken (1 goal). Kailey also played well in goal as did Rachel Reder. Excellent all around games were also played by Annie McManus, Sammie Ostrander, Reilly Nichtern, Maisie Courtney and Molly Green.
In earlier action, the Second Grade Girls (Team #1) had a great game against Our Lady of Snows. Solid goaltending by Molly Burns held Snows scoreless for the first half. Kaylie Walsh scored SFDS1’s first two goals, helped by the aggressive play of Kelly Erhard, Makayla Braskey, Shaun Smith and Fallon Brackley.
In the second half, Caroline Gifford made a great pass to Brooke Leahy, who scored goal #3 for SFDS1. Super teamwork from Jennifer Quagliariello, Sophia Keeler, Colleen Bambury and Casey Gilroy helped the team wrap up a 4-0 win over team Snow with another goal (hat trick) by Kaylie Walsh.
The Second Grade Boys (Team #1) fell to Our Lady of Grace, 2-0. A hard fought loss, Grace applied strong pressure and kept fullbacks TJ Mahoney, Gerard McManus and Jack Evangelista busy throughout the game. Goalie Sean Peter Mullen had some great saves, while Michael Coletta, Michael Tuffey, Nico Allen and Danny Cornish all had strong games on offense. Finally, Jack Tansey made some terrific plays, and controlling the ball midfield.
The First Grade Girls (Team #2) had a busy week, suffering its first loss of the season to SFDS #1 with a score of 4-1. Goalies Noreen George, Charlotte Spaeth and Shannon Tuffey each had some tremendous saves while in goal, but the offensive pressure of the other team prevailed. Vivianna Moore scored the lone goal for SFDS #2.
The infamous cross-town rivalry took place the following day against Blessed Trinity, resulting in a 0-0 tie. Outstanding play by goalies Noreen George and Sarah Doda kept Blessed Trinity from scoring, each having three fantastic saves. Within the last minute of play, Charlotte Spaeth successfully blocked a corner kick, securing the tie for SFDS.
Wrapping up the busy week, SFDS #1 defeated Hope 3-0. Defensive line Keira Rodkin, Lucy O’Brien and Fiona Mullen kept the ball away from the net throughout the game, while Vivianna Moore, Emily Harkins and Noreen George each scored a goal.
Finally, in another great game against their neighbors from Blessed Trinity, the First Grade Girls (Team #1) lost a tough 1-0 game. The game was very well played with both teams taking turns at controlling the action before a late goal by Trinity provided the difference in the game.
St. Francis was led offensively by Sammie Ostrander, Claudia Kelly, Paige O’Neill and Maggie McIvor who all created several scoring chances. The defense was also strong, led by Isabella Edri, Maisie Courtney and Rachel Reder who did a great job of defending their end of the field to support the excellent goaltending of Kailey Aiken and CeCe Agoglia. Annie Mc- Manus and Molly Green also played strong games both offensively and defensively for St. Francis.
