Rockies 2010 Hockey Season Off To Rolling Start

The Rockaway Rockies continued their 2010 roller hockey season on Sunday, October 10 under beautiful weather. Both the Minor Division (9 and under) and the Major Division (13 and under) put on thrilling matches. The Boardwalk Bagels sponsored minor division had the Blue team knocking off the Red team behind the great play of Sean Erico, Ryan O’Connell and Justin Aleman.

Each player skated relentlessly all game long and netted several goals for the Blue team. The outcome could have been much greater if it wasn’t for the spectacular goal tending of Colin Flaherty for the Red team. Ryan Murphy scored a beautiful goal for the Red team and was helped out by strong play from Luke Foye, Liam O’Connell and Patrick Torpe.

The Major Division had two well played games with Boarders Surf Shop knocking off The Wave in the early game 6-4. The kids from The Wave bounced back with a 6-3 victory in the late match over Elegante Restaurant. That win puts The Wave in first place in the early going of the Major Division season.

The hockey league features two leagues with boys and girls between the ages of 5-13 years old. The Minor division incorporates the younger children and has two teams that face off against each other every week. The Major division has three teams that will play a competitive season ending with playoffs and a league championship.

The Rockies have boys and girls from all over the peninsula and Broad Channel ranging in skills from very competitive travel ice hockey players to novice skaters just learning the game. All the games are played on Sunday mornings at the rink on Beach 108 Street and Shore Front Parkway. Each division also has one practice session during the week. If anybody is interested in signing up for the Rockies, please come down to the rink on Sunday morning.
