Turner Won’t Repudiate Hate

Dear Editor,

It’s been nearly four weeks since Bob Turner’s refusal to do anything but support Carl Paladino and his intolerant statements. Jewish leaders begged Paladino to repudiate his hateful comparisons of Jewish Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver to Nazi beast Adolf Hitler. Now Republican leaders like Rudy Giuliani and Rick Lazio are asking Paladino to take back more intolerant statements. Despite this, Bob Turner mocked requests he say anything to Paladino, and has proclaimed his support for the Republican nominee in a local Queens meeting.

My campaign sent a letter to Turner on September 16, asking him to publicly repudiate Paladino’s hateful comments, noting anti-Semitism especially by leaders must always be condemned, not laughed at, because it makes further anti-Semitism acceptable in public life. Turner’s campaign responded by denying responsibility for Paladino’s comments and laughing the request off as “political games.” This kind of hate speech is despicable, divisive and poisonous and has no place in our democracy. It’s now been a month of waiting for Robert Turner to condemn the anti-Semitic and intolerant statements of Carl Paladino. Why won’t Robert Turner complain about these hateful comments?
