Never Been So Proud
I have never been more proud of where I come from than I was this past Tuesday night. Hundreds and hundreds of Rockaway/Broad Channel/ Far Rockaway and Breezy residents united together to march across the Cross Bay Bridge in protest of the unjust toll for residents to come and go from their own community. The spirit in the air was one of strength and unity and I was so proud of everyone who showed up to march. The people of the Rockaways have always had to fight to be treated like members of this city—whether it was to own their own land or to protest the double fare on the subway. This is no different.
Last night was just the beginning of what the people in this community can do. We have to continue to fight and come out in even more numbers. I want to thank our fearless leader in this mission, Democratic District Leader Lew Simon who was also joined by elected officials, Congressman Anthony Weiner and Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer (sorry to other electeds, sending an Aide is NOT the same thing as walking with your people). We made the 10 and 11 o’clock news Tuesday night and this is just the beginning! There is another proposed toll hike in January—maybe the MTA thinks it will be too cold for us to make any noise in the winter? I for one know I will be there with my gloves and hat on and hope a thousand more show up.
The only way we have ever changed anything here is by making noise.
Thank you so much Lew for organizing this and giving us hope that when people are unified we can make a difference. You can count on me for the next protest/march/rally!
