St. John’s Baptist Hosts Health Fair
The Samaritan Hands Outreach Center of St. John’s Baptist Church, located at 74-05 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, held a successful health fair in conjunction with the Joseph P. Addabbo Family Health Center on Saturday, September 25.
The event was supervised by The Samaritan Hands director, Deacon Jimmy Stillwell; Addabbo’s Nursing director, Michelle Modeste; and the director of the Ryan White Program, Rosa Rodriguez.
Addabbo Family Health Center and the Ryan White Program invited several organizations to help promote positive, healthy practices of families. The community was able to meet clinicians who offered free diabetes, blood pressure and HIV testing and advice. There were facilitated workshops on Ready Rockaway practices, health and New York Life Insurance opportunities, and WIC nutrition. The Civilian Complaint Review Board was also on hand to provide follow-up assistance to individuals and families.
The fair was hosted by the SJBC Health Ministry, and introduced their Health Ambassador Director, Inez Cole, and her co-ambassadors. The additional volunteers all worked harmoniously for more than 200 people who visited from 10 to 4 p.m.
Staff members for Senator Malcolm Smith and Assemblywoman Michele Titus were on hand offering community news. Smith’s mobile van offered medical and health insurance assistance.
Attendees received gift bags, toys for children who registered for daycare and/or the Josephine Johnson Tutorial Services offered at St. John’s Baptist Church. Members of the local fire house also attended and allowed children to jump on board the fire truck, blow its whistle and interact with firefighters during a question and answer session. Lunch was provided and The Dance Ministry performed.
