From The Artists Studio
The long-anticipated printmaking exhibition, InkSplash, begins this weekend in sTudio 6 Gallery on Saturday, October 9. The opening reception is Sunday, October 10 from 12 to 4 p.m. Curated for the second year by Christian Le Gars, this year’s exhibit is expected to surpass the quality and breadth of 2009’s InkSplash, which received significant critical acclaim and was reviewed in the prestigious Journal of the Print World.
Once again this year several printmasters from the world-renowned Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop will participate. In addition, several RAA members will add their talents to the show, resulting in a broader scope and variety of talent and techniques and of intriguing images. The workshop members include an international list: Devraj Dakoji, whom Le Gars calls “one of the preeminent printmakers of India”; Justin Sanz; Rie Hasegawa; Luanda Lozano; Tara Sabharwal, whose work appeared last year in the show at the Queens Museum of Art on the Indian Diaspora; Noah Jemisin, whose works are exhibited courtesy of Skoto Gallery, the goal of which is to bring contemporary African artists to New York; Christian Le Gars, one of the artists whose work is included in the portfolio of the Blackburn Workshop that is housed in the Library of Congress.
Among the RAA members included in this stellar list of participants are: Jeff Berman, who will display hand painted original digital prints, combining more than one technique; the father and daughter Kevin Callaghan (giclée prints) and Kalin Callaghan (etchings); Geoff Rawling; John Russo; Daniella Sessa; the father and son Janusz Skowron and Arthur Skowron; and Yuri Yurov, contributing original giclée prints and original digital prints. Other printmaking techniques that will be seen in the show include woodcuts, lithographs and transfer relief prints.
Confused by all these printmaking terms? Take heart. To guide you through and explain all these techniques, many of the artists will be available at the reception to answer your questions. As a special event, on Sunday, November 7 at 2 p.m. in sTudio 6, a lecture, “The Art of Print-making,” will feature participating artists discussing techniques used in their work. Admission to the exhibit, reception and “The Art of Print-making” is free. Gallery hours: Saturday and Sunday 12-4 p.m. and by appointment.
InkSplash has been scheduled to coincide with the prestigious International Fine Print Dealers Association (IFPDA) Print Fair and Print Week. The 2010 Fair will run from Thursday, November 4 through Sunday, November 7, with a preview Wednesday evening, November 3. It is held annually in The Park Avenue Armory, 643 Park Avenue at 67 Street.
RAA is now hosting a Friday Teen Night at sTudio 7 in Fort Tilden, starting at 8 p.m., called “Gen M” (Generation Music). What began as a pilot program has been extended.
