Weiner To Turner: Repudiate Paladino

House Race Heats
By Howard Schwach

Incumbent Congressman Anthony Weiner has called on his Republican challenger, Bob Turner, to repudiate the “anti-Semitic” comments of Republican Gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino.

“In the past few months, we have seen a frightening rise in hateful speech and anti-Semitism across the country,” Weiner said in an open letter to Turner, who lives in Breezy Point. “The candidate that you pledged to support for Governor, Carl Paladino, has compared Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver to Hitler, saying, ‘If ever I could describe a person who would fit the bill of an Antichrist or Hitler, this guy is it.’ This kind of hateful, poisonous rhetoric has no place in our democracy. For a candidate who you said is ‘dynamic’ and who would be a ‘forceful leader’ this kind of language is wildly inappropriate and hurtful.”

Paladino has been widely charged with “over the top” speeches and with taking millions of dollars in taxpayer money in rent for the buildings he owns in Upstate New York and for grants he got from the very politicians he now says he wants to go after “with a baseball bat.”

Turner, the local who is running for Weiner’s Congressional seat, responded in a letter to Weiner this week.

“I will not be held accountable for the alleged comments of another member of the Republican Party, any more than I will ask you to account for the actions of Charlie Rangel,” Turner wrote. “As a non-career politician, I have no interest in partisanship and I have zero tolerance for ‘gotcha’ politics. As a businessman, I am campaigning to represent my district on the economic problems we are facing. My candidacy is based on the very issues you are trying to avoid.”

“What you are accountable for,” Turner continued, “is your support of the Obama-Pelosi failed economic agenda and your support of the health care bill. You have claimed authorship of a bill that the majority of your constituents never wanted.”
