BT 5th Grade Girls Rock On A Hot Friday Night
The unseasonably warm weather was not the only unusual occurrence Friday evening in Breezy Point. BT 5th grade girls were set for a tough game against Hope — a notoriously difficult team – and beat them 5-0.
BT took the field with guarded confidence and brave souls. BT’s expectation was to pull out a narrow win against Hope but what ensued was a complete shocker.
BT set the tone early, despite the defensive efforts of three Hope opponents. The first goal was driven in by Erin Wallace. Shortly thereafter Hope put one in as stunned spectators remarked on the change of caliber in this Hope team from the previous year.
BT dominated the offense racking up goals sent in by Maeve Regan, Rhiannon Gormley and Grace Kane, making the score 5-0 by the second half. The defense could not be penetrated. Each and every defensive player – Lizzy Young, Kate Danaher, Nadia Mohamad, Elizabeth Nies, Madison Henderson, led by sweepers Molly Sautner and Jackie Wilkins – put their heart into this game.
Tara Lennon, Caitlyn Billows, Jessica Geis and Emma Gross on the midline drove the ball up to the offense allowing their team to score repeatedly. Lauren Regan knocked down Hope passes and prevented them from getting near the goal. Marie Barron and Caroline Dolan were effective at getting to the ball fast and stopping it from going out of bounds allowing BT greater opportunity to move the ball into position.
Goalie Katie McDonough stopped shots on goal 100 percent of the time. The reward was clear as she was air lifted off the field by her teammates.
Most notable, however, was BT’s sportsmanship and heart. They cheered for one another and in the end cheered for Hope on a well played game.
BT played this same team on Sunday and what a difference. On Friday night, it seemed as though Hope found it difficult to move the ball around to players who could receive it. On Sunday, their girls were passing and shooting at a much different level. Clearly, BT was faced with a differently motivated team as Hope won 2-0.
The BT 5th grade girls might face Hope again in the playoffs and the team will be ready to face them.
