BCAC Shamrocks CYO Soccer Round-Up
Having just introduced a new Girls Midget team to the CYO Soccer program the SCV Shamrocks have made a dramatic improvement in just three short weeks. The proof of that became obvious this weekend with a hard fought 0-0 tie against an excellent SFDS team at the BCAC Memorial Field.
Excellent defending by Nicole Vega, Tamia Miller, Mary Israel, Noel Cook and Mary Moroney kept the visitors’ chances to a minimum but when called upon, goalkeepers Alex Cook and Natalie Houston proved to be unbeatable and held on for the shutout.
The improvement was just as evident in midfield with some impressive breakaways lead by Mary-Kate Maher, Kayliegh Burke, Heather Bollman, Jillean Fenty and Ryan Hobson almost netting the home team the winning goal but a strong SFDS defense kept them out with some great defensive play. Those chances were set up by some great running and passing from Layla Farmer, Rian Brasch, Payton Kalisak and Lauren Lynch capping off an impressive team performance.
SCV Girls Bantam had a tough weekend with a narrow defeat to St. Andrews on Friday and a hard fought defeat against a strong Blessed Trinity side on Sunday afternoon. However, there was a marked improvement throughout the team with some stand out performances from Katie Corbett, Emma McCarthy, Erin Moss and Grace Collins to name just a few.
The Girls Intermediate team displayed their fighting spirit with a dramatic comeback from a 2-0 deficit with only minutes remaining on the clock. Megan Minihane was at her very best in goal and made some excellent saves to keep SCV in the game and her team didn’t let her down.
Eileen Doughty narrowed the margin to 2-1 with an impressive long range free kick. But SCV Shamrocks were not finished. When Hunter Hennessy and Alexa Youre combined in midfield to set Teresa Rissmeyer free she made a 50-yard run and smashed the ball into the net with a composed finish to tie the game.
