Correct Some Misconceptions

Dear Editor:

I’d like to thank Mr. Israel for his interest in our canceled Fall Festival. However, if I may, I’d like to correct some misconceptions he has concerning the event.

First it’s not the “Riis Park Festival,” but rather the RMAC Fall Arts & Crafts Festival. Secondly, as for no announcements, signs, or public apologies, there were numerous announcements and articles in The Wave (Where else can one get local information, but from their local newspaper?) giving reasons for the cancellation as well as copies of letters written to Senators Schumer and Gillibrand, and Representative Weiner asking for their help in reducing fees charged by Gateway National Recreation area (they did not respond). There has been an explanation for the cancellation of the Festival on our web site (http://rockawaymusicandarts.org/ne ws.htm) for a number of months, as well as an announcement on our phone messaging unit. Lastly, Gateway, as a federal facility, does not promote the Festival - it was purely an event planned, promoted and implemented by Rockaway Music and Arts Council for the past 25 years and held on public park land with the cooperation of the park staff.

And, by the way, it may not have been the “world’s greatest show” in Mr. Israel’s eyes, but it must have been so to the tens of thousands who came back each weekend for 25 exciting years to enjoy Rockaway’s Festival!

STEPHEN YAEGER
PRESIDENT, RMAC
