The RAA Writers Group Event is Sunday, September 26 in sTudio 7 Gallery. A musical offering from 1:00 to 1:30 p.m. introduces the event.

The performances of original member works begin between 1:30 and 2:00 p.m. Included are a variety of literary forms: poetry, prose, plays, essays, short stories; each lasting from 10 to 20 minutes.

ARTSPLASH continues through October 10. You will find a mix of mediums, genres and subjects in the exhibition.

In “On the Connecticut River,” Stephen Yaeger displays his excellent handling of the medium of pen and ink, creating the range of textures in foliage, water, the wake of a small boat and tree bark.

Yaeger’s love of the natural world is evident in this woodland scene. The same artist shows his versatility in the digital photograph, “Korean War Memorial, Washington, D.C.,” a powerful juxtaposition of a soldier statue and reflected images, resulting in a poignant tale.

Words and their manipulation play a vital part in ARTSPLASH. Dan Guarino’s “Talk, Talk,” which won the ARTSPLASH Best in Poetry award, is clever, political, facile, image-making. “Reflections Upon the Canopy of Time,” by Joan Boudreault, is a framed series of excellent Haiku poems and small accompanying images.

The same artist, in two watercolor paintings achieves the strength and weight of oil and the air and breath of watercolor.

Message from RAA’s Halloween Magicians (President Geoff Rawling and Co.):

The Halloween theme this year is “Grimm and Scary Tales.” We will be turning sTudio 7 into a forest of fearsome creatures from under your bed. The first Halloween meeting will be on Monday, September 27 at 8 p.m. in sTudio 7.

Anyone interested in getting involved in any way should come. The actual event will be on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of Halloween weekend from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. each day.

Participants will be expected to arrive no later than 4:30 p.m. Get your evil imaginations going, stir up those twisted childhood memories and create your own fairy tale nightmare character; we of course will help.

Yuri Yurov will have a solo show at The Atrium Gallery, 12 Court Street, Morristown, New Jersey.

The opening reception is Thursday, September 30, 2010, 6 - 8 p.m. The show is on view September 30, 2010 – January 12, 2011.

The Brooklyn Watercolor Society is presenting “Watercolor Performances” at the Williamsburg Art and Historical Society (WAH Center) through October 2. The participants include names familiar to Rockaway – Christian Le Gars, Ellen Hoyt, Arlene Cornell and Stephen Yaeger.

WAH Center is located at the corner of Bedford, next to the Williamsburg Bridge, at 135 Broadway, Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Visit online at www.wahcenter.org

Christian Le Gars, watercolorist, printmaker and curator of “InkSplash: A Printmaking Exhibition,” is now featured in “The Best of Worldwide Watermedia Artists,” Volume 1.

The photograph on the front page of The Wave last week pictured the sculpture of the firefighter’s helmet atop the memorial stone in Tribute Park.

It should be noted that the sculpture was lovingly created by artist Izabella Slobodoff. Bella was a very talented artist who worked in many mediums. She was also a great lady. This was her last sculpture. Izabella Slobodoff was able to bring heart, warmth, light and dignity to a piece of stone. We miss her.
