St. Francis Summer Basketball Classic Continued To Shine

The 26th season of the St. Francis Summer Classic was another tremendous success. Over 1000 players participated on 88 teams in 13 divisions. It began with the Graybeards on April 21 and ended with the Girls High School and Women’s Open A championships on August 24. The Classic offered 15 games a night on 5 courts during the core of the season and fulfilled its unofficial role as the Town Square.

The action was great but the friendships and memories that were forged were greater.

The year 2010 saw the resurfacing of the yard, rehabilitation of the office/snack shack, installation of new signs, and the beginning of the overhaul of electrical and lighting. These projects returned the Fr. Grogan Memorial Schoolyard to the condition all have associated with the Summer Classic as one of New York’s premier summer basketball programs.

The 2010 champions were: Boys Grammar Middle Division-Melons; Girls Grammar Senior Division- T. Moriarty & Son; Boys Grammar Senior- Division B R S; Girls High School Division-Animal Hospital of the Rockaways; Boys High School Division-Grayridersband. com;

Women’s Open B Division- Harbor Light; Women’s Open A DivisionErin White; Men’s Open Division- Belle Harbor Steakhouse; Graybeards Legends Division Team Boyle; Graybeards Young Guns Division- Team Harkins

St. Francis wants to thank all their sponsors, coaches, directors, officials, assignors, timers, scorers, staff, fans and other volunteers.

Thanks, also to Msgr. Brown and the St. Francis rectory staff.

Thanks most of all to their players – the young (and the not so young). The organization hopes you recall this year’s Classic in your conversations years from now, just as they do now.

The message to their fans is, “See you next year for the 27th edition of the St. Francis Summer Classic. Don’t forget to register, beginning April 15.”
