Rockaway St. Camillus Special Olympics Celebrates Many Events
The new year of 2010 for the Special Olympians began with the Hearts and Shamrocks Dance at St. Camillus school hall. This dance is to celebrate those who were honored at the Rockaway Beach St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
Our volunteer coach of 13 years, Kathleen Clarke, was one of those chosen by the parade committee for her Irish heritage, her many community activities and talents. The athletes were up to “High C” with excitement and applauded loudly as Kathy took the stage. Everyone ate corned beef and danced the afternoon away.
At the end of February, the athletes and their families had their annual weekend of winter activities at Windham Mountain. Our gang enjoyed snow tubing, snowshoeing and, of course, skiing. Our athletes received medals on Saturday evening for their athletic accomplishments.
In March the group marched in the Rockaway St. Patrick’s parade and danced and ate corned beef once again at the annual St. Patrick’s dance at St. Camillus Hall.
In April the athletes participated in a basketball competition at Fordham University. In May our team competed in a track and field event at Victory Field. On these occasions, the athletes showed their talents and were rewarded with ribbons and medals.
Finally, on June 21, our friends Andy Cholakis, proprietor of the Tap and Grill, and Lynne Washburn hosted our end of season party. We had a spectacular evening. Thank you goes to Andy and Lynne.
As always, we must extend to Father Ahlemeyer our sincerest gratitude for the use of Springman Hall for 10 months each year. Father Ahlemeyer, Father Dunne, Mrs. Margaret O’Neill and Joe Wiley are always responsive to all our requests. Thank you all.
