Rockaway Walks Program Ends Summer Season
Rockaway Walks was founded four years ago in response to climbing obesity and diabetes rates in the Rockaways. The health initiative notably aided several participants in shedding pounds.
“Not only did we walk this year to lose weight and get in shape, but also to celebrate life, be outside, and enjoy the beautiful summer weather,” said Councilman Sanders.
This year, as in the past years, Steven C. McCartney (Fitness Instructor/ coordinator) led participants in warm up exercises prior to the walk.
“I would like to thank Councilman Sanders Jr. for his support of our community,” McCartney said, adding that the theme for this year’s program was a focus on First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move campaign against obesity.”
That program says eat fewer unhealthy food choices and move more in activities you can enjoy.
The program was also, aligned with the state’s learning standards for physical education, reflection, literacy and differential learning; teaching lifelong learning skills”, said McCartney.
