New Kind Of Bagel

Dear Editor,

Re: the Beachcomber report concerning the tax on prepared food if a whole bagel was cut into two halves. I would suggest that bagel bakers might want to bake halfbagels and remove the crust from the “cut” side.

The customer buys two halfbagels, adds whatever to one half, puts the two half-bagels together and voila. Certainly there’s nothing resembling prepared food here as defined by the losers up in Albany.

As for eating the bagel in the store, all the customer has to do is walk outside, take a bite out of his bagel and go back into the store. Since he was eating the bagel before he entered the store he surely can’t be taxed as many people walk into stores munching on food.
