ARTSplash Comes To Fort Tilden This Weekend

Dozens Of Local Artists To Present

The Rockaway Artists Alliance brings all the arts together in one place with its newest exhibition, ARTSplash 2010. ARTSplash will fill the sTudio 7 gallery and adjoining stages at Fort Tilden with the work and talents of more than three dozen artists, performers, writers and musicians from Saturday, September 12 to Sunday, October 10.

An opening reception will be held on Sunday, September 13 from 12-4 p.m. A second exhibition, InkSplash, a statewide exhibition of NY print artists, will be on view from Saturday, October 9 to Sunday, November 7 in sTudio 6, with its opening reception on Sunday, October 10 from 12-4 p.m. Admission to both exhibitions and special events is free.

ARTSplash 2010, the largest exhibition of the year, will present a kaleidoscope of evocative painting, sculpture, poetry, photography, mixed media and more.

The works themselves range from large to small, from sublime landscapes to swirling forms of color and shape. They invite the viewer to observe quiet intimate moments and equally to step inside grand vistas as if they were there.

Each artwork offers a window – dark or light, sunny or shadowed or somewhere in between – each crafted by the individual skill, talent and imagination of the artist.

Interwoven into the exhibition will be a variety of performances and special events. The opening reception, for instance, will feature the talents of pianist Jackie Stellato and singer/ songwriter/musician Dan Guarino. ARTSplash will also form the backdrop for the RAA’s Thursday Night Open Mike Music Nights starting at 7:30 p.m. on September 16, 23, 30 and October 5, and also a planned live Monday night radio broadcast from station WFMU, featuring some of the best and most varied local and visiting musicians.

Sunday, September 26 will see the Rockaway Artists Alliance Writers Group taking the stage with all original music, poetry, prose, stories and plays all written, produced and performed by the group.

Previous performances have included movingly emotional short stories, impromptu surprises and stand-up comedy, and have engaged large and attentive audiences.

Starting around 1:30 p.m., the program will be preceded by live and lively musical entertainment. At 2 p.m.

on Sunday, September 19, historian and artist Bernie Feuer will present Mighty Navy Wings, a sight and sound exploration of Brooklyn’s Floyd Bennett Field (formerly, Naval Air Station, New York) and the Rockaways’ place in aviation history.
