Brooklyn Man Drowns In Neponsit

By Nicholas Briano

A Brooklyn resident drowned in Neponsit last Saturday afternoon. A Brooklyn resident drowned in Neponsit last Saturday afternoon. The death of a Brooklyn man swimming in Neponsit last Saturday afternoon has been ruled an accidental drowning this week by the New York City Chief Medical Examiner.

Lifeguards jumped into the ocean near Beach 147 Street at approximately 1:00 p.m. when they witnessed Mark DiPalma, 50, struggling in the water, police said.

DiPalma, a Bay Ridge resident, had been pulled from the water by lifeguards, and was unconscious when police arrived. He was transported by paramedics to Peninsula Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. According to published reports, it was not immediately clear what caused his distress. However, sources told the Daily News that lifeguards knew DiPalma, who frequented the Neponsit beach and that he appeared to suffer a heart attack in the water. The medical examiner, however, determined otherwise.

This is the fourth drowning in Rockaway this summer, but just the first one to occur while lifeguards were on duty.
