Champions Awarded As St. Francis Classic Comes To A Close
The 26th edition of the St. Francis Summer Classic concluded last Wednesday with the Girls High School and Women’s Open Championships.
Cross County Savings Bank rolled through the Girls High School basketball schedule undefeated and eliminated Coastal Real Estate in the semi-finals. Animal Hospital of the Rockaways had provided their stiffest competition but could not get over the hump.
After surviving a tough semi-final against Ridgewood Savings Bank, Animal Hospital took another shot at Cross County in the championship. The game was close throughout with Animal Hospital holding a one point lead at the quarter and at the half, but Cross County held a 36-34 edge going into the final period.
Cross County coach Clare Droesch’s squad revved up their engine and poured in 22 points to pull away to a 56-46 win and the championship. Casey Collins, Jackie Gillen, Ashley Raaf, Deirdre Ray, Shannon White, and Shannon Delfini paced Cross County’s balanced attack. Elizabeth Lynch led the way for Animal Hospital along with Taylor Conroy, Rebecca Moers, Fallon Mullen, and Kristin D’Chiutiis. Additional contributions came from Kristin Henschel, Christina Rocks, Taylor Gallagher, Diane Ford and Tawana Holder.
Bayview took a 23-19 lead into halftime of the Women’s Open A championship against Erin White. As the second half went on, Bayview wore down defensively, which allowed the regular season leaders Erin White to tally 35 points to take the championship, 54-44.
In the Women’s B championship, a packed gym watched as Harbor Light and Jameson’s battled for bragging rights for Beach 129 Street and Newport. Harbor Light emerged victorious and both teams celebrated afterwards at the champion’s establishment. Maggie Allen captained the team which also included Katelyn Lawler, Michelle Raaf, Candice Clark, Kristina Triglia, Gina Buscemi, Elizabeth Jablonski, Jean Marie Haggerty, and Yolanda Alford.
