For members who wish to participate in the event, send Dan a) your name, b) the title of your piece(s), c) the genre i.e. short play, poetry, prose, etc. and d) the type of piece, i.e. is it a comedy, drama, etc. Up to ten minutes stage time will be allotted for poetry, prose, music, et al.;15-20 minutes for a short play. ALL Pieces Must Be Original.
You can have someone read for you if you do not wish to read yourself. Playwrights will need to recruit and rehearse their own actors. But we do have a number of talented performers who are members. Anyone wishing to volunteer as a reader/actor should also contact Guarino.
August has been far from a sleepy summer month at RAA. sTudio 7 has been crackling with the energy of excellent, significant artwork, the fresh vision of emerging talent.
First up in the month were the humorous, ‘crowd-pleasing’ acrylic paintings of Matthew Petagna, on display in “Matt’s Show.” There is little I could add to the many words of praise in this newspaper for the glowing, profound photographic portraits taken by Yuri Yurov and exhibited in “Rockaway Artists Unframed.” More than an artistic accomplishment, it was a spiritual communion of the creative souls of our peninsula. Thanks in large measure to the guiding, loving hands of Marina Callaghan in bringing that goal to fruition.
The exhibit’s reception was made as delicious as it was by the generosity of the friends and supporters who put their hearts and kitchens into yet another aspect of the event’s spirit of togetherness by contributing food and drink to the evening. The musicians and writers who performed were fitting illustrations of the talent that inhabits our Rockaway. Among them were the fabulous Guy Nevirs and the equally fab John Simonelli. I’m forgetting people, it’s 11:35 p.m. and I’m exhausted. So more thank yous next week when I’m awake. Golly, it’s been a tough week.
“The Art of Arthur Skowron” reminded us of one of the most significant, uplifting aspects of the Rockaway Artists Alliance – its ability to be a welcoming, supportive haven for young talented artists. Skowron has a fresh, original vision that grabs the eye and the mind and keeps them fixed on the image, to roam, to fly adventurously, instinctively, philosophically, intellectually, metaphysically through its landscape. His paintings of fish are so alive. They draw the viewer into them – there appears to be a real emotional, empathetic connection between painter and subject. Each is a story that seems to be told from the point of view of the fish. The colors and textures of the thickened paint add to their vibrancy.
The Saturday reception was highlighted by Skowron’s talents as a poet and musician, playing everything from Beatles to Chopin to Pink Floyd.
