Broad Channel Bits

High temperatures earlier this week put all of us back in the oven, so we finished off August as a lot of this summer was — in the 90s.

At least when the humidity is low, it doesn’t feel that hot. It actually feels more comfortable in Hawaii when the humidity is lower and day after day is in the 90s than it feels in places like here with a high humidity index.

Earlier this week, there were three children diving and swimming by the sluice. The water looked so inviting, it was hard not to want to jump in and cool off!

Religious Education Classes (CCD) will take place at St. Virgilius Church on Tuesday, September 14 for Grades 6, 7 and 8 and on Wednesday, September 15 for Grades 1 through 5.

Registration (and re-registration) takes place in the Parish Office, 16 Noel Road, during regular office hours (Mondays to Fridays, from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.).

Sister Mary Anne will also hold registration on Saturday, September 11 after the 4 p.m. Mass. For more information, call 718-634-5680.

A reminder that the Old Timers Softball Game is on Friday of Labor Day weekend at 6:30 p.m. at the BCAC field. “Anyone who ever played for either Grassy Point or O’s Pub, please join us for the 1st annual Old Timers Game O’s Pub vs. Grassy Point.”

Only a few tickets are left for the $10,000 drawing to be held at Countdown. Shares are available.

Half tickets are $50; one quarter ticket is $25. Holders of winning shared tickets share prize.

At the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge on Sunday, September 5 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. take part in “Shorebird Sunday.” Walk to the East Pond mudflats and watch shorebirds during peak of the southbound migration. Wear waterproof footgear. Bring binoculars and a scope if you have one.

Two events are scheduled for Frank Charles Park over the Addabbo Bridge in Howard Beach. “Explore Broad Creek Marsh” by paddling a kayak from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, September 3. Call 718-338-3799 to reserve a spot for you.

“Sunset Paddle” will take place on Wednesday, September 8 from 5 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. so you can enjoy a late-inthe day paddle and a Jamaica Bay sunset. Call 718-338-3799 for reservations.

Every Thursday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., there will be a free Yoga Class with Broad Channel resident and yoga instructor Mary Lou at Fort Tilden in sTudio 7 Gallery (through main gate to intersection in front of old chapel; turn right, go past Post Theater and T6 to T7 on left. Parking is available outside T6 and T7). Bring mat or towel. Wear loose comfortable clothes.

Note New Hours: The Broad Channel Library will have new hours, effective Tuesday, September 7: Monday and Thursday from 1 to 8 p.m.; Tuesday from 1 to 6 p.m.; Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturdays, the library will be closed.

Christ Presbyterian Church will present a Sunday Brunch on September 26 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

On the menu is a choice of: scrambled eggs with bacon or sausage, or pancakes with bacon or sausage. Hash browns will be served with both. Coffee, tea, juice and cake will be served.

A 2-session Defensive Driving Course sponsored by St. Virgilius Parish will be given on Wednesday, September 29 and Thursday, September 30 from 7 to 10 p.m. in the School Building at 16 Noel Road in Broad Channel, in the lunchroom.

By taking this course, you can receive a 10 percent reduction on your car insurance for 3 years or up to 4 points off your license. No test will be given. Fee is $60.

Payment in full guarantees a seat — they are unable to hold a seat without payment.

The last day at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge visitor center to see the art exhibit on Birds of the Northeast United States will be on Thursday, September 30.

SAVE THE DATE: On Saturday, October 9 from 7 p.m. to midnight the Broad Channel American Legion Auxiliary will present A Tribute to Sinatra and Elvis. “Two talented guys will sing Sinatra and Elvis Hits.”

Save the Date: On Friday, November 12 a Job Fair will be held at the Aqueduct Racetrack Clubhouse (event will be held indoors in 3rd Floor Manhattan Terrace Room) at 110-00 Rockaway Boulevard, South Ozone Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Free parking; wheelchair accessible; business attire is suggested. Over 100 potential em-ployers are expected; bring plenty of resumes.

Enjoy Labor Day weekend and have fun taking part in the activities that go with it — whether they be Mardi Gras-related or barbecuing or swimming (temperatures are expected to be only in the 70s but weather things change …) and – for goodness sake — don’t miss the Grand Parade!
