Sanders Call For ‘Level Playing Field’

City Councilman James Sanders, Jr., who represents the eastern end of the Rockaway peninsula, recently released the following statement regarding the awarding of construction contracts for the new Penn Plaza skyscraper:

“I am pleased to announce that we have successfully fought to ensure that the new skyscraper at 15 Penn Plaza will be built in part with contracts awarded to minority business enterprise and women business enterprise construction and design firms.

“This is a project that will come to define the heart and soul of New York, and it is only right that its design and construction should reflect the rich ethnic diversity and cultural heritage of our city. Only in doing so can we respect the true identity of New York City and ensure that New York remains city for all New Yorkers. It’s a shame when a contractor who happens to be a woman or a person of color can do better in Selma, Alabama than in New York City. Today, we took a step towards a truly level playing field for all.”
