The fourth floor fire at 85-02 Rockaway Beach Boulevard began shortly before midnight on Monday night and stretched into Tuesday. A spokesperson for the New York City Fire Department said that the fire broke out in apartment 4H at 85-02 Rockaway Beach Boulevard in the sprawling Hammel Houses public housing complex a minute before midnight. Police responding to the call of a fire on the fourth floor knocked on the door of the apartment, but could not rouse the resident. Eventually, the door was knocked down and the unidentified elderly man was extricated from the apartment. A few minutes after midnight, the fire department transmitted a working fire call and asked for more units to work the high-rise fire.

The All-Hands fire department call brought 12 fire units and more than 60 firefighters to the scene. The fire was declared under control at 12:12 a.m., officials say. The elderly victim was transported to the Peninsula Hospital Center, where he was treated and released.
